We have updated hacknight.se – Go and check out the schedule and spread the word!
Hacknight is a free one-day creative tech conference in Malmö, Sweden on June 19, 2010.
Local hackerspace Forskningsavdelningen invites you to enjoy tech culture unfolding. Hands-on workshops and a captivating speaker track will cultivate and realize ideas. Network with participants from all over the scene.
A large, industrial house plays host to the hordes of interested tech heads. For the duration of the conference, the hackerspace is extended to encompass the whole building.
We have quite a few topics to choose from that will be announced as soon as we have fitted them into the schedule. We are still open for workshop suggestions though. As we have quite a large space for this purpose we have room for two or more workshop areas for example.
Talks begin at 17.00 and will be in 1hr slots, but are not yet set as of which talk will begin when. Workshops will have introductions before they start and then continue at one of the workshop locations for a limited or unlimited (until hacknight is over) time.
Go and tell your friends! hacknight.se
We also made a Facebook event so invite your friends and spread the word!
Introduction
SIDblaster/USB is a portable PC SID-synthesizer. Hook it up to your USB-port and you’re good to go. It is designed to work with a MOS 6501 SID. If you need to use a 6500 or 6502, the RNM-0512S needs to be replaced by a 5V to 9V DC-DC regulator.
Compatiblity
SIDblaster/USB is partially HardSID-compatible (under Windows) in the sense that it can be used in many programs that support the HardSID by the means of a hacked hardsid.dll. Compatiblity has been verified with SidPlay2, SidPlay2/W and GoatTracker.
Schematic
The decoupling capacitors (the grouped 100nF, 10nF and 4.7nF) should be connected near their respective circuits:
- 100nF: FT232R
- 4.7nF: FT232R
- 10nF: PIC16F86
PCB
Two examples of compact pcb solutions (left: hole mount right: surface mount) that can be mounted in a small case. The AUDIO port needs to be wired to a suitable connector, for example a 3.5mm audio jack. The card is intended to be mounted in a case with tracks for the PCB. The height of the card needs to be adjusted to fit different cases. On the left hand side of the PCB is a USB-B port. You’ll need to open up a rectangular hole in the case for this port to slide through when the PCB is inserted.

Compact hole-mount solution. Verified, functional!

Ultra-compact SMT solution, only ~50% larger than the SID-chip. Not verified!

- Not critical, may be bridged. Used to remove high frequency interferance.
- May have suitable replacement.
- Is a 1x40 header that should be broken into two 1x3 headers to replace the 2x3 header.
- Is a 1x40 header that should be broken into two 1x14 headers that will hold the SID.
Need to know
The PCB layout is missing a restor on the ICSPHDR between the VPP and VDD pins. This resistor MAY be needed for ICSP-programming using a programmer that requires external MCLR (ICD3 for example). The resistor should be between 1k and 10k (see programmer documentation), 4k7 worked well in our case. The resistor is only needed during programming, once programmed you can bridge VPP and VDD using a jumper. If internal MCLR is used, no jumper or resistor is needed.
Several of the capators in electrokits online catalogue are incorrectly marked in regards to pin spacing. All capacators should have a spacing of 2.54mm, allthough 5.08mm spaced capacators can usually be bent so that they’ll fit.
Depending on what version of the PCB-layout you have, it’s possible the the DC-DC regulator will not fit. This has been corrected in later revisions of the layout. The legs of the regulator can be bent so that they can be connected using a piece of wire.
Shock sensitivity
During shipping (using swedish postal service in a padded envelope) of the first SIDblaster from Sweden to Åland the SID-chip became dislodged from it’s socket. Apart from this and the fact that the CD was crushed it was in good shape upon arrival. If your SIDblaster is to be transported or otherwise roughly handled you might want to consider locking the chip down in some way.
Contact
If you are interested in the Windows software (hacked hardsid.dll with MinGW source), PIC firmware (.hex or assembler source) or gerber and excellon files for PCB manufacturing – you can contact me at the hotmail address “senseitg”. Either that, or you could drop by the research department next tuesday!

This past Tuesday was an ordinary Tuesday.
But at the Forsk, there were many faces, some folks I never saw before. Much welcome! Lots of activity. This is a partial log of events, to give you a feel for what you missed.
One tall young long-hair (haha) helped out cutting and stripping cable pieces for a huge project StG is diligently working on. He said: “I program Java and C. And I tried Processing, and mostpixelsever (that multi-screen addon). And I tried openframeworks.” I did not see if he had brought a computer. Moral: always bring gear. And, dear long-hair, bring a computer with some code next time, and explain some stuff. It’d be cool. You have lots to contribute.
For myself, I had brought nothing. So I helped strip cable. Hrm.
Annika brought a small project soldering some cable headers onto individual cables in a computer board with a power switch and two LEDs (harddrive and power). “I’ve had this multimeter since I was 14.” and “It was ten years ago since I last soldered anything.” For those who read previous details, she’s a veteran of Malmö Uppfinnarförening (Inventors’ Association of Malmö).
Web hacker Oscar came to the Forsk for the first time, and had brought some software projects with him. “I want to test stuff in Rhino and in V8“, he said on the phone, when he asked me if anyone was there. Minutes later, he was in a couch, explaining the finer points of jspec, a JavaScript testing framework written in Ruby. He and I sat down with laptops and explained stuff to each other. I wanted to make better testing for MailControl, which is a kind of “MVC for email”. You could wire it up to remote control your programs via specific email addresses and commands in the Subject and Body sections of the email. PB stopped by and brought candy and crisps, and had some questions he needed answers for. One was about a small job, and another was “which CMS is a good backend for a full-Flash website solution?” Ease-of-install and previous knowledge led him to use PHP-based Typo3. “Find their RSS plugin, and fiddle with it, to get a simple XML export, that might please your Flash masters.”
kopimi passed by, as did Hanne. qzio was not feeling well, and stayed home.
Teddy was concentratedly talking on a headset, probably networking about networks. (So much activity is going on that it’s hard to keep up with projects. And much of the activity can be a bit quiet, so you need to poke your nose into it.)
faidros had found one of those “joystick with games in it” and hooked it up to an existing TV set. The sounds of ancient games filled the room. Those sounds are quite wonderful/annoying.
phrst was building a mechanical machine that was using the drill-press to make holes in a CD, and used a part of an old harddrive and some wooden board with holes in it. He demonstrated its parts and people wowed.
omni came by and handled some hardware. He treated me to a late-night post-Forsk falafel in Möllan.
